Lingering Effects of Post-concussion Syndrome

From the Brain to the Body

The brain communicates with the body via the brainstem. The passageway between the brain and the body is very narrow, and there are two small bones in the upper neck vertebrae that hold the head in position.

When those two bones—the Atlas and Axis vertebrae—are out of alignment by as little as ¼ of a millimeter, it obstructs the passageway through the brainstem and leads to various complications throughout the body.

A Case Study on Post-Concussion Syndrome

A research article in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research published on January 6, 2011 details the results of a woman who underwent upper cervical chiropractic care after suffering from a concussion due to a fall.

When she first sought chiropractic care, she showed symptoms of vertigo and headaches consistent with post-concussion syndrome (PCS). She had suffered from a history of frequent headaches, but the frequency of her headaches increase after her concussion. She also complained of positional vertigo that occurred immediately after the trauma.

After an examination by an upper cervical chiropractor, it was determined that the increase in her headaches, muscle spasms in her upper neck, and her positional vertigo was the result of a body imbalance due to leg differences caused by a misalignment in her upper cervical spine.

Immediately after she received her first upper cervical adjustment, her headaches and vertigo immediately stopped. An evaluation of X-rays after that adjustment also showed a significant improvement in the alignment of her upper neck vertebrae. Her follow-up examination the next day also showed a balancing of her legs and a significant decrease in muscle spasms in the neck.

She continued her care, as well as her progress was monitored, twice a month. The results of her care were monitored at every evaluation. She no longer suffered from vertigo and those headaches that she rated as a two out of ten, which had occurred for an average of two hours everyday also stopped.

The Upper Cervical Difference

So, what’s the difference between this woman who received upper cervical chiropractic care after she suffered her concussion and those who don’t. She chose not to suffer. It’s that simple. She chose not to allow one minor injury to her upper neck to lessen her quality of life.

Of course, it would be nice if we could solve all of life’s problems by simply making a few minor adjustments to the upper neck, but we can’t. An upper cervical chiropractor can, however, examine your upper neck vertebrae and make necessary adjustments to your upper cervical spine that will lessen any complications that might be caused by a misalignment to your upper neck vertebrae.
