Spinal Alignment Helps Vertigo Sufferers

Anyone suffering from vertigo is all too familiar with the feeling that he or the things around him are spinning. This can be quite disheartening. The underlying cause of such a condition has to do with the vestibular system that includes the inner ear and is responsible for balance and letting the brain know where the body is located in its environment. Some conditions have vertigo as a primary symptom. These include such things as:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: This is the most common form of vertigo. It is known for a sudden onset of symptoms often related to sudden head movements.
  • Vestibular Neuronitis: The vestibular nerve becomes inflamed leading to vertigo and possible hearing loss. It can also be diagnosed as Labyrinthitis.
  • Labyrinthitis: Inner ear swelling causes hearing loss due to bacteria, infection, or allergies. Hearing loss is temporary and often returns once the swelling reduces.
  • Meniere’s disease: Tinnitus (ringing in the ears), a feeling of fullness in the affected ear, and hearing loss are all common with this condition. It can occur at any age but generally, happens at ages 40-50.

Realigning the Upper Neck Can Alleviate Vertigo

Vertigo may happen once and never come back again, and that is a good thing. However, in some cases, it recurs over and over again. If this is the situation, a person may want to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor such as myself. I have seen many success stories with my own vertigo patients.

Often, a misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae, particularly the C1 and C2, can cause undue pressure to be exerted on the brainstem. This affects the central nervous system, causing the brain and the body not to communicate properly. This means that the body sends signals to the brain about where it is located in its environment that are incorrect. One can see how this would lead to vertigo.

Using a gentle, precise alignment these bones can move back into position. When this is done, the symptoms of vertigo will often decrease and sometimes go away completely.
