How to Stop Scoliosis in Graham Washington

Scoliosis, Bent Spine, Back Pain, Back Ache

Just what is Scoliosis? Well, according to WebMD, “[It’s] a disorder that causes an abnormal curve of the spine, or backbone. The spine has normal curves when looking from the side, but it should appear straight when looking from the front.”

“In about 80% of cases, the cause of scoliosis is not known.”

Unfortunately, doctors are unable to determine the cause of Scoliosis, or curvature in the spine, in 80% of people diagnosed with it. It is usually found in middle-school-aged children, who are examined for it, but it is possible that a person may not be diagnosed with this condition until he or she is an adult.

Of course, while the hope is that a person would not be diagnosed with this condition at any age, it is better that they are diagnosed at a younger age. It would be better to diagnose a seven-year-old child with an eight-degree curvature in their spine than a 13-year-old with a 15-degree curvature.

The reason for that is that diagnosing scoliosis early gives health experts a better chance of  stopping it from getting worse and even reversing it. Early detection can reverse the psychological as well as physical consequences that may arise, which can impact a child’s self-image.

The physical pain is much worse, as it can lead to heart problems, breathing problems, osteoporosis, accelerated disc degeneration and spinal pain, reproductive malfunction and pregnancy problems. These are just some of the consequences associated with untreated scoliosis.

There are three ways within the medical profession of handling Scoliosis. The first is to do nothing, and wait for it to get worse. The second way is to put a brace on a person for 23 hours a day that will cover the entire trunk. And, of course, the final way is surgery. The problem with all three of those methods is that none of them get to the underlying source of a person’s scoliosis.

Upper Cervical Approach: Proprioceptive Problems

A major cause of Scoliosis is head and neck injuries, which may affect the proprioceptive system of the neck. That’s the system that allows our body to perceive our position in space. The upper cervical spine is the area of the body with the most proprioceptors, and damaging them can cause all sorts of health problems.

The good news is that upper cervical chiropractic can correct this underlying cause of scoliosis, so as to restore proper neurology and physiology to the body.  That good news gets even better the sooner a person is diagnosed with Scoliosis. No one wants to receive that news from their doctor, but it’s better to receive it sooner than later.
