The Underlying Cause of Meniere’s Disease

Meniere's Disease, Vertigo, Ringing Ear, Dizziness, Dizzy

Common symptoms of Meniere’s disease include a constant ringing in the ears and chronic bouts of dizziness. Other symptoms include hearing loss, tinnitus, pressure in the ear, and vertigo. While Meniere’s can affect individuals of all ages, most patients display with symptoms between ages 40 and 59.

What Causes Meniere’s?

While the ultimate cause is a mystery, current research has shed much light on the subject. The inner ear is an important part of the Vestibular system that is responsible for maintaining balance and telling the body where it is in relation to its surroundings. A certain amount of pressure and a particular level of fluid are needed for the sensors in the ear to operate properly. When these factors are altered, it may result in conditions such as Meniere’s disease.

Other suggested causes include:

  • A blockage that causes improper drainage of fluid
  • Immune abnormalities that affect ear fluid levels
  • Allergies
  • Certain viruses
  • Genetics
  • Head or upper neck trauma
  • Migraines

Besides knowing the underlying cause of Meniere’s, it is also important to understand what causes a flare up for you personally. Untreated, Meniere’s can ultimately lead to hearing loss. By identifying personal triggers, you can reduce how frequent episodes occur and lessen the likelihood of permanent hearing damage. Common nutritional triggers include:

  • Tobacco
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Salt
  • Any food you may be allergic to

While reducing the number of episodes is nice, it is even better to treat the disease itself. An upper cervical chiropractor can get to the root of the problem by checking for a misalignment in the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Dr. Craig Lapenski of Graham, Washington is experienced in correcting such a misalignment.

Misalignments in the upper neck have been shown to be responsible for many neurological conditions. If you have suffered head or neck trauma, even if it was some years ago, why not get a consultation to determine if a misalignment has resulted? A gentle and natural treatment plan may be able to reduce your symptoms or even resolve your condition completely.
