Vertigo Facts in Graham Washington

Vertigo, Dizzy, Spinning, Meniere's Disease

A person may have heard of vertigo or even wonder if they are experiencing it, but may not know exactly what it is. It is a sensation of dizziness that feels as if the person is spinning or the things around him or her are spinning. Many times it is the result of a problem in the inner ear. What causes this?

  • Meniere’s disease: This condition is known for severe incidences of vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), a feeling of fullness in the ears, and possible loss of hearing.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: Small calcium particles lodge in the ear canals. This distorts signals sent to and from the brain about the actual position of the body, creating imbalance issues.
  • Labyrinthitis: Generally caused by a virus that brings about inflammation near the nerves causing balance to be hindered and, once again, affecting communication between brain and body.

Sometimes, a very common reason for the above-mentioned conditions is overlooked. These vertigo-inducing issues can be caused by a head or neck trauma. These injuries may have been severe, such as a car accident that caused whiplash. Or they may be from a fall as far back as a person’s childhood, that seemed insignificant at the time. However, if something has happened to cause a misalignment of the C1 or C2 vertebrae (the uppermost bones of the neck), this may be the cause of vertigo.

Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to find and correct these misalignments. At Advanced Spinal Care, we understand that a misalignment of the upper neck can be putting undue pressure on the brainstem and hinder the flow of blood and that of nerve function to the brain. This can be the very thing that is causing an inner ear balance problem.

It is crucial to a person’s overall health to have the C1 and C2 in proper alignment. When these are back in place, the brainstem functions correctly. The brainstem regulates a majority of the natural functions of the body. By getting those two bones back in place using the NUCCA technique, a person may have a decrease in vertigo symptoms, or they may go into remission entirely.
