When Fatigue Leads to Depression: Supporting Children with CFS

Children Who Deal with Depression

Did you know that, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, on any given day about 2% of elementary-aged children and 8% of preteens and teens are at risk of major depression? These children show clear psychological warning signs, putting them at risk for ongoing emotional challenges.

A study published in the British Medical Journal examined 542 children aged 12–18 who suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Alarmingly, 29% of these children also experienced depression, with many reporting additional pain and anxiety. These overlapping symptoms place them at an even higher risk for emotional distress.

The overlap between depression and CFS is not surprising. Symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, isolation, and body pain are common to both conditions, creating a cycle that can feel impossible to break.

Healing from CFS and Depression

While the medical community often relies on medication to address symptoms, children and adults struggling with CFS and depression have found relief through upper cervical chiropractic care.

This specialized and gentle form of chiropractic focuses on the upper neck vertebrae, without popping or cracking the spine. By correcting misalignments in the upper cervical spine, pressure on the brainstem is relieved, restoring proper nerve communication between the brain and body.

Unlike medications that only mask symptoms, upper cervical care targets the root cause. Misalignments in the upper neck can contribute to depression, mood disorders, CFS, anxiety, and fibromyalgia. Correcting these misalignments has helped many patients experience improvements in energy, mood, and overall health.

The evidence points to one clear method of long-term healing: rather than relying solely on medication, patients benefit most when their care is guided by an upper cervical specialist who can address the underlying spinal misalignment causing these symptoms.
