How Sleep Quality Impacts Migraine Frequency

A recent study published in the journal Headache highlights the importance of a good night’s sleep for people who suffer from migraines, according to a report from the Huffington Post.

Researchers at the University of Mississippi found a clear association between poor sleep quality and both the frequency and severity of headaches, as well as increased disability during migraine episodes.

The study compared students who experienced migraines with those who did not, analyzing their sleep habits. Among students with migraines, the researchers recorded headache frequency, intensity, and the level of disability experienced during each episode.

Key Findings:

  • About 26.7% of the nearly 300 students studied had migraines.
  • Poor sleep quality was more common among migraine sufferers (85.9%) than among those without migraines (62%).
  • Among students with migraines, poor sleep quality was linked to more frequent and more disabling headaches.

“Consistent with prior studies on chronic migraine, poor sleep quality is uniquely associated with episodic migraines,” the researchers concluded.

Earlier research, also published in Headache, suggests that maintaining good sleep habits may reduce both the number and intensity of migraines, according to WebMD.

Drug-Free Migraine Relief

Addressing migraines effectively means getting to the root cause, not just treating symptoms. For many, migraines begin after head or neck trauma, such as a car accident, fall, or other injury. Traumas like these can cause misalignments in the upper neck, which have been shown to affect blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow between the brain and body.

Changes in fluid exchange in the brain have been linked to a variety of conditions, including migraines and sleep disturbances.

The upper cervical system provides a way to correct these misalignments. Upper cervical doctors:

  1. Perform a postural examination to identify body imbalances.
  2. Take precise 3-dimensional upper neck x-rays to calculate the exact misalignment.
  3. Apply a specific correction, followed by follow-up x-rays to ensure the misalignment is properly addressed.
