Understanding Vertigo and Disequilibrium
Last week, we talked about the difference between Vertigo and Disequilibrium. We also talked about how both conditions are symptoms of underlying conditions, so it’s important to determine which of these conditions a person suffers from.
Since we talked about Vertigo related conditions and diseases last week, this week we’ll talk about diseases and conditions you might have if you suffer from disequilibrium. If you didn’t have a chance to read last week’s blog, check it out.
Disequilibrium Related Diseases
- Inner ear (vestibular) problems – Your inner ear has a lot to do with balance. A disturbance in it, caused by such things as autoimmune inner ear disease, can cause you to feel unsteady.
- Sensory Processing Disorders – These occur when the brain cannot receive and respond to information from senses properly. This can be a sign of several diseases including Autism.
- Neurological Conditions – Parkinson’s disease, cerebellar ataxia (a result of various diseases), and other neurological conditions that effect the cerebellum (helps control a person’s motor function) can cause disequilibrium.
- Medications – This possible side effect of anti-seizure drugs, sedatives and tranquilizers is just another reason not to take over the counter or prescription drugs.

Living Past Disequilibrium
In last week’s blog, we talked about how Vertigo can be a sign of conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, or brain hemorrhaging. This week, we talked about how disequilibrium can be a sign of Autism, Parkinson’s disease, or any disease that causes cerebellar ataxia.
If you or someone you know suffers from chronic dizzy spells, but your not sure if it’s Vertigo or disequilibrium, it’s important that you receive the proper care. An upper cervical chiropractor can examine your nervous system to determine what might be the underlying causes of your sense of dizziness.
Misalignments in the upper neck can lead to changes in the nervous system, changes with blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid. Correcting these upper neck misalignments that are frequently associated with head and neck injuries can have a dramatic impact on those suffering with vertigo, dizziness and disequilibrium.
