Vertigo • Dizziness • Spinning • NUCCA Care
Last week, we discussed the difference between vertigo and disequilibrium—and how both are symptoms of deeper, underlying conditions. Since we covered vertigo-related diseases in Part 1, this week we’ll look at conditions linked to disequilibrium.
👉 If you missed last week’s blog, be sure to check it out before reading on.
Diseases and Conditions Related to Disequilibrium
- Inner ear (vestibular) problems – Your inner ear plays a vital role in balance. Conditions such as autoimmune inner ear disease can disrupt its function, leaving you feeling unsteady.
- Sensory Processing Disorders – When the brain struggles to properly process information from the senses, balance and coordination can be affected. This can occur in conditions like autism.
- Neurological Conditions – Diseases such as Parkinson’s, cerebellar ataxia (linked to multiple causes), or other conditions affecting the cerebellum (the part of the brain that helps control motor function) can lead to disequilibrium.
- Medications – Certain anti-seizure drugs, sedatives, and tranquilizers list dizziness and imbalance as side effects—yet another reason to be cautious with prescription or over-the-counter drugs.
Living Beyond Disequilibrium
While vertigo may point to conditions such as multiple sclerosis or brain hemorrhage, disequilibrium can be connected to disorders like autism, Parkinson’s disease, or other cerebellar dysfunctions.
If you or someone you know struggles with ongoing dizziness but aren’t sure if it’s vertigo or disequilibrium, seeking the right evaluation and care is essential.
A Board Certified NUCCA Doctor can assess your upper neck alignment and nervous system function to determine whether a misalignment is contributing to your dizziness. Misalignments in this area can disrupt blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid circulation, leading to symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, and disequilibrium. Correcting these misalignments—often caused by past head or neck injuries—can create lasting improvements in balance and quality of life.
