Previously, we looked at Ménière’s disease, a condition characterized by vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss. Today, we explore a natural, safe, and gentle approach for those suffering from this condition.
Research on Upper Cervical Care
Dr. Michael Burcon studied 139 patients diagnosed with Ménière’s disease and treated them with upper cervical specific chiropractic care.
- Results: 136 out of 139 patients (97%) experienced absence or dramatic reduction of symptoms, particularly vertigo.
- Vertigo Severity: On a scale of 0–10, with 0 being no symptoms and 10 the worst, vertigo scores dropped from 8.5 to 1.4 after two years.
- History of Trauma: All patients had previously experienced cervical trauma, most from automobile accidents causing undiagnosed whiplash injuries.
These improvements significantly impacted daily life: patients could work, drive, and maintain personal relationships. Residual attacks were less frequent, shorter, and less intense, with faster recovery times.
Hope for Vertigo, Tinnitus, and Hearing Loss
Example from Dr. Burcon’s Study
“Jack first presented with left-sided Ménière’s on June 11, 2001. Diagnosed by an ENT specialist using a normal brain MRI, positive audiological testing, and abnormal ENG testing, he was referred for endolymphatic sac decompression surgery, which he declined. He was advised to apply for disability benefits, which were granted.
Jack’s history included a rear-end auto accident at 45 mph in 1980. His Ménière’s symptoms began in 1994, with frequent vertigo lasting 1 day to 1 week, nausea, vomiting, constant ear fullness, tinnitus, and frequent neck pain and headaches.
On examination, Jack presented with a 1-inch short left leg. After one week, his legs were balanced, and he was vertigo-free. His wife noted a change in his voice, and he reported being able to walk four times as far. At six weeks, his vertigo rating dropped from 10 to 2, nausea/vomiting from 10 to 0, and ear pressure from 10 to 1. He remained vertigo-free for over a year.”
Trauma History and Upper Cervical Care
All patients with vertigo or dizziness should be asked about past trauma, especially:
- Whiplash from car accidents
- Contact sports injuries
- Serious falls
Patients often forget these incidents, assuming they were uninjured since there were no broken bones or bleeding. Those with a history of vertigo and trauma should be evaluated by a Board Certified NUCCA Doctor.
