Vertigo and Disequilibrium: Could Your Neck Be the Cause?

Two very common types of dizziness are vertigo and disequilibrium.

  • Vertigo is the sensation that either the person or the things around them are spinning.
  • Disequilibrium is the feeling of falling or floating, often accompanied by the sensation that the floor is tilted, sometimes requiring assistance to move safely.

What Can Cause Dizziness?

Several conditions and factors may contribute to dizziness:

  • Certain medications: Some prescription drugs—such as those for seizures, depression, tranquilizers, or sedatives—can cause dizziness as a side effect.
  • Neurological problems: Disorders like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis can impact balance and stability.
  • Vestibular (inner ear) disorders: Proper inner ear function is essential for balance. Conditions such as ear infections, autoimmune disorders, or fluid buildup can disrupt equilibrium.
  • Sensory processing disorders: If the brain cannot properly interpret information from the five senses, dizziness may result. Autism spectrum disorder is one example where this can occur.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care for Dizziness

For those experiencing dizziness—whether vertigo or disequilibrium—finding a fast, effective, and natural solution is crucial.

Upper cervical chiropractors examine the top two vertebrae in the neck (C1 and C2) to determine whether misalignment may be contributing to symptoms. When these bones are out of position, the brainstem can become compressed, disrupting communication between the brain and body. This can affect cerebral blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid flow, contributing to dizziness and balance problems.

By gently correcting misalignments in the upper neck, the body’s natural healing processes are restored. Many patients have reported that their dizziness resolved completely, often without the need for medications.
